Course Description

This course provides yoga instructors and yoga therapists with a comprehensive, science-based understanding of bone health, bone loss and the positive impact of informed yoga practice on bone density. Participants will explore skeletal anatomy, bone physiology, remodeling processes, and the clinical implications of bone loss. Emphasis is placed on applying this knowledge to safe, effective yoga instruction.

Through an evidence-informed lens, this course examines the role of weight-bearing and resistance-based yoga practices in improving bone mineral density, reducing fracture risk, and enhancing functional movement. Participants will gain practical tools to safely adapt yoga practices for individuals with compromised bone health. This coursework hopes to inspire yoga instructors to create inclusive and targeted yoga classes for individuals seeking to maximize function and health.

Explain bone remodeling processes and cellular activity

Define bone mineral density and DEXA scan results

Distinguish between osteopenia and osteoporosis

Identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for bone loss

Identify conditions and medications contributing to secondary osteoporosis

Explain the benefits of yoga for bone health

Differentiate between types of yoga sequencing for students with bone loss

Design safe, evidence-based yoga sequences for individuals with bone loss
